Persius X Cornutus

Aulus Persius Flaccus, commonly known as Persius, was a Roman poet and satirist deeply influenced by his mentor, the Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Cornutus. The bond between Persius and Cornutus was both intellectual and emotional, with Cornutus playing a significant role in shaping Persius’s thoughts and writings.
After Cornutus passed away, Persius was profoundly affected by the loss. Overwhelmed with grief and perhaps struggling with self-doubt in the absence of his mentor’s guidance, Persius reportedly burned many of his own manuscripts. This dramatic act highlights the depth of his attachment to Cornutus and his reliance on his mentor’s wisdom and support.
