IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and altered bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation). The exact cause of IBS remains elusive, but current research suggests a multifactorial etiology involving gut motility, visceral hypersensitivity, altered gut microbiota, and the gut-brain axis.
Psychological factors, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, have been consistently linked to the development and exacerbation of IBS symptoms. Notably, studies have shown a higher prevalence of childhood trauma or abuse in individuals with IBS, highlighting the potential role of early-life stress in the condition’s pathogenesis. Understanding this mind-body connection is crucial for developing comprehensive management strategies for IBS.
